I believe the purpose of a college education is to gain a sense of experience and learn more about yourself and want you want to do with your life. I think going to college is extremely important to build a better future for yourself. The rate of salary is much higher for someone with a college degree than someone who doesn't have a college degree. I feel a sense of pride telling family members that I go to college because I am the firsts in my family to go; so everyone seems to be very proud of that. College is a great experience because you learn so much about other people and yourself.
I think what it means to be educated is to have a sense of knowledge about who you are as a person and who other people around you are. I think in college you become extremely independent and learn how to pick yourself up alone when you've hit rock bottom. Being educated happens from experience and not necessarily from a text book. I think in college you learn how to be street smart and how to be book smart. You educate yourself on different cultures and math equations and parts of the body (all depending on what major). Being educated to me means having been through so much experience and learning how to adapt alone.
Ive had many things happen in my life that have led me to this belief. When I was 10 years old, I witnessed police bumbard into my house and watched my mother get put into the back of a cop car. I can easily say that was one of the hardest things ive had to deal with for 3 years. It was extremely hard to completely forgive her and im not sure I still do; but I love her with all my heart and there was one day that I received a letter from her during her jail time that I realized she helped me. I will learn from her mistakes and be a better person because of it. I am stronger and more educated on things that most people know nothing about. My dad helped raise me to be the person I am and I wouldn't have changed my life in any ways at all if I could.
Another moment in time that led me to believe that being educated means adapting and growing up was coming to college. Realizing that I had to start making all of my own doctor appointments and emailing my own teachers and being disciplined enough to say no because I have a paper to write. Coming to college had made one of the biggest impacts in my life and its extremely eye opening. I am extremely lucky though because my dad knew this was going to happen to me and he didn't want it to shock me. I had to start doing most things on my own junior through senior year of highschool and doing that has made it a lot easier to live on my own.
